Online Dating – E.t. Email Home!

Of course, this quote from the famous movie, was done in the 80’s, heck, even an Extra Terrestrial didn’t have email or instant messengers back then, he had to use a “Speak and Spell” machine, which was close enough, right?

I’ve done some research on the internet and I’m wondering if this is a new generation thing. I am now seeing that people are admitting that when doing online dating, they’d prefer to be “in communicado” via the chat client like Yahoo Instant Messenger or AIM (AOL Instant Messenger). I think people are subconsciously being less personal and less personal by the day. It just seems that online dating these days is being taken for granted.

We are relying on new kind of communications technologies to stay in touch with each other, and I think we are doing it a little too much. Thing is, I have noticed with people and acquaintances I’ve observed that they sometimes tend to ignore their flashing buttons on their answering machines and ignoring currently incoming phone calls because they are “too busy” to answer it, but there are times where I have caught them ignoring left messages and phone calls in a causal manner where they, in a cavalier-like manner say, “I’ll call them later” or “I’ll get back to them later” and sometimes they just forget altogether. Then their friends get irritated with them that they never returned their call, this is esp. annoying when someone ignores a dating prospect or “would-be boyfriend/girlfriend”.

Is it me, or am I the only one that gets a sense of excitement when I see that flashing light on the answering machine, I run over and immediately press the button to see who it was that called. I suppose I have this desire to have friends and comrade.

It then occurred to me, if people are using their technology to IGNORE people, then why even bother to own these fancy electronic devices?

I think Caller ID was probably one of the better things invented, for some, you can find out who it is that is calling, and if it’s some guy you gave your phone number to, that you never wanted to give the phone number to in the first place, it’s a great “buffer” device so that when you give out your number, you don’t feel as bad because you can just ignore the call, right?

Of course, the draw back to caller ID when calling a woman, is when you don’t leave a message, and you call back a second time and STILL don’t leave a message, you’ll be labeled as a weirdo. Back when there was no Caller ID, a woman wouldn’t know how many times you called. Hey, as the old saying goes “What you don’t know can’t hurt you.” right?

Anyhow, I would think we’d be pretty much better off living in the days with the old rotary phones, because I think with these modern devices, people seem to be less appreciative of the relationships with their girlfriends and boyfriends. I sometimes wonder if the more cell phones, digital pagers, and other communications devices are there purely to make the person just “appear” to have a great social life, perhaps they just enjoy the attention they get?

Which will probably lead into my NEXT installment, “The Online Scene – is it just for Attention Seekers?”
